Remembering Oriskany

USS Oriskany CVA-34

1966 Westpac Cruise Log

Origin of Oriskany's Name

Through a wooded ravine near Rome, New York, runs Oriskany Creek. In the Mohawk Indian language "Orisk" means nettles, "any" indicates on or near the water. This "Place of nettles on the water" was the scene of one of the bloodiest battles of the Revolutionary War. Here American militia under General Nicholas Herkimer were ambushed by British and Indian forces attempting to come to the aid of Fort Stanwix. Although General Herkimer was killed in the famous battle, it ended in an American victory, preventing the British occupation of the strategic Mohawk Valley and neutralizing General Burgoynes army at Saratoga.
